Music and Farming

Those who say that musician have it easy are mistaken.  We work hard, my dad and I often compare music to farming.  You work long hours at a profession that no one seems to really notice.  Maybe its not a great comparison, my father feeds thousands of people and animals a year and I only fill rooms with sound, noise.  But there are similarities, we both feel that in the end of the day we’ve really accomplished nothing because sometimes it takes weeks or months for our labour to bear fruit.  We both feel like no one cares, its not everyday some actually thanks a farmer.

Music and farming are two great examples of jobs you do for love not for money.  Some 16 hour days turn into 80 hour work weeks and in the end you might sell a few CDs or the crop or meat price may be below what it cost you to produce it but you do it anyway.  Not so that someone will thank you , or write you a cheque for a million dollars (although that would be nice) but because you can’t imagine doing anything else with your life and you’d rather be poor and happy then rich and miserable.

So next time you see a farmer, thank them….it means more then you know.
